So
here I am. Exams are over, grades are in, ambassadors ball is over, packing is done
its so depressing. The ambassadors ball was so much fun. We had a great, great dinner and then awesome desserts. Then there was dancing up on the 7th deck and everyone was a hot sweaty mess but it was awesome.
And now its over. Where did the last 4 months go? I left home January 16th, left America on the 17th and now returning tomorrow, on May 5th. These past 4 months I cant even begin to explain. I cant even think of how to put 4 amazing months into words. How am I going to explain to people the massiveness of the Great Wall, the man with no face in Vietnam (ok, ok
he HAD face
theoretically, but it was all burned away), the slums of India, the beautiful beaches in Mauritius, the townships in South Africa and the beauty of Table Mountain, the slave dungeons in Ghana and Christ the Redeemer in Rio? I can but its not going to mean anything to the people hearing it. To them its just me telling stories and them seeing pictures
but they wont feel it
and thats what makes the stories so much better.
I never dreamed in a thousands years that I would travel the world and go to the places that I have been. Ive always WANTED to travel the world but I never thought I could actually do it. And yet here I am. Check that off my bucket list. I slept on the Great Wall
THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA
I slept on it!..in FEBRUARY. Oh it was amazing. This whole trip has been amazing. I honestly cant put it into words. I really cant. I saw Christ the Redeemer in Rio and he was covered my scaffolding
no one else has seen him covered in scaffolding so I feel pretty special. I pushed myself and did things i wouldnt do
such as abseiling down a cliff into water in South Africa. -
Tomorrow I get back to America. I will be an Academic Adventure-er as Don would say. I have grown so much on this trip. I have seen things that you would only read about in textbooks, I talked with people I never thought I would talk to, I bargained with the best, ate food that I would NEVER dream of eating, and lived, breathed and learned in every country. Im gonna get home and be home for 5 days and have an itch to get back to the MV. Im gonna miss all my friends I made here, the shipboard life in general
I mean come on.. this past semester was so legit
laying out and going to class every day and broken up every once in a while with 5 days in a country to do whatever I want. I couldnt ask for a better study abroad program. The things I have learned on this trip and the people I have met are incredible. I learned so much not just about the world and the countries I visited but about myself. I left home, thinking I knew who I was. I came on this trip and realized there is so much more that I want to do with my life. I want to see so many more countries, meet so many more people, and experience so many more cultures. This trip made me flexible. Who plans anymore? Planning is for people who not interested in the now. The best days I had were the days that my plans were thrown out the window and I just went where the wind blew me. The days where you just hop into a rickshaw in India and see where the driver takes you
the days where you just walk the streets and take everything in. Those were the days I learned the most
when I just went with whatever I felt like and didnt have a set place to go and see. The people I have met along the way have been truly amazing. They are people I will never forget
this trip is something I will never forget. The MV has been my home for 4 months
and now Im leaving it. So depressing!
I just want to thank my mom and dad. Honestly, without them I wouldnt be here. I know so many times my dad probably wanted to kill me with all the emails I sent because I froze my account for not knowing my pin number (stupid Chinese ATMs have their numbers all backwards). But if it werent for them I wouldnt have had this great opportunity. So ma and dad
thank you for everything. When I get rich
you guys WILL be life long learners. I wish you guys where there with me the whole way so that I dont have to repeat all my stories and so that ma didnt have to worry about me non-stop for the last 4 months. So
Thank you mom and dad for giving me the world
you guys really are the best parents EVERRRRRRRRRRR.
And for everyone else
thanks for reading! I hope it was somewhat entertaining for you. When I was sitting in the dining hall today, Clive came up to me and told me that Im gonna go home and everyone is going to be excited and want to hear my stories but after a week they will be bored. He said that no one is going to understand what I saw and what I did and it wont hold as much significance to them as it does to me. And its so true. I mean come on
I wouldnt want to hear about someone who just spent a semester traveling the world if I was stuck at home. Talk about BORING. But thank you. Thank you for reading and taking an interest. This trip has been a trip of a lifetime
I know I said that multiple times but it really has. And I suggest EVERYONE goes on Semester at Sea or becomes a Life Long Learner
something me and my friends here are already planning of doing together. Hahah. Im not even gone yet and we are planning when to see each other!
Its a bittersweet moment. It really is. But every story has to come to an end and its time to go home. It has been a hell of a ride and experience and I wouldnt trade it for the world.
SEE YA IN AMERICA!!

The Rest of Brazil!
Our second day in Rio, I went on a walk with Katie and Neha on the beach. We walked from Copacabana to Impanema. Rio beaches are definitely something everyone should experience. People are all in speedos and tiny baithing suits, they are all playing volleyball or paddle ball or soccer and they are all just having a great time. When we got to Impanema beach, we climbed up on rocks that looked over the whole beach and just took some pictures and took it all in. We then walked back to the hotel and it was close to 2 by then and I just laid out by the pool waiting for Tess to come back to go back to the beach but by the time she came back, it had gotten cloudy and too windy so we just hung around the pool before going in and getting ready for the night.
We ended up meeting up with Stephanie and Amy and the SAS trip that night at some carnival thing for a saint. It was an odd place. It was literally just this huge fair full of shopping stands, food stands and restaurants. I got a meat kabob. Haha. It was so good!! We then went to a restaurant to get dinner. After dinner we got dropped off at Lapa and we were trying to find this bar that Jaime said to meet at. And we found it and then we met up with these other guys (who ended up being from Pennsylvania and went to Bloomsburg) and we hung out with them and walked ALL OVER Lapa before stumbling upon a free regae concert! How clutch!! So we hung out at the concert and then went out.
The next day we had our flight back to Salvador. It was raining in Rio so we didnt do anything. We got back to Salvador pretty late (like 7) and i wasn't feeling good and was exhausted.
Our last day in Salvador I spent shopping. There was a huge market right near our boat in the lower city so I went there and shopped for awhile. We also went up to the upper city for a little and walked around. After we were doing shopping, we just decided to get some beeers and spend the whole 10 real we have left and get drunk. We went back to the ship around 3:30ish and laid out by the pool and get a table because that night we were having a BBQ. It ended up RAINING then and we ate inside because it started down pouring. Like I said
now I know what Brazil has been having such bad mudslides. I went out at 8 with Steph and Tess to watch us pull out of our LAST port.
Honestly
where as the last 4 months gone? It has been INSANE!! I just dont get how fast time went and how I have been to 8 different countries. Its crazy.
Well Ill write more later. I have to PACK! GROSS!!!!

Rio day 1
The first morning in rio we woke up around 8 and I went down to breakfast with Katie. After breakfast, we decided to go to Corcovado
or Christ the Redeemer. Before our trip to Rio, we were hearing rumors about Christo being closed because he was struck by lightning back in February and then was graffitied on a couple days before we arrived. Who graffities Jesus?! Thats so bizarre. So anyway
we took the bus to the base of Jesus where we were hounded by a tour group to bring us up to Christo for 50 reals. me, Megan and Katie all just paid 45 reals for transportation up, to stay up there as long as we want, our ticket, and a ride down. We ended up meeting this French guy in the van up to Christo and chatted with him. We got to the top and saw that Jesus was not covered with a tarp which was said on New York Times because of the rainstorms but instead he was covered in scaffolding because he is going under a renovation after getting struck by lightning. He also had a big picture covering his face because that is where he was graffitied. How cute, even Jesus gets plastic surgery. It was beautiful up there. You could see all over Rio and all the different beaches and lagoons and then of course
we did a jumping picture. That is like a staple SAS thing. You must do a jumping picture in front of anything. Hahah. So after Christo, we went back down to the bottom and we saw MONKEYS!! Oh I was so excited to see monkeys! They were like chilling on the roof of the ticket place eating and drinking soda! How precious.
After Christo, we walked the streets of Copacabana and found a wet market/fresh market where the Brazilians do their grocery shopping. These markets are so cool because no one sees these things in the states. They literally shut down 2 blocks and its just vendors of fish, fresh fruit and vegetables, flowers, and spices just line the street. I have seen these markets in Hong Kong and Brazil and it was interesting to compare them. In Hong Kong there was waaaay more fish and in Brazil there was more fruit. After the market, we just went back to the hotel because it was close to 3:30 or 4 ish and just laid out by the pool. At the pool we ran into a SAS alumni! They were the LLC of the Yellow Sea and the Librarian of the Spring 2009 voyage! How crazy is that!? We literally just sat at the pool with them for awhile and talked about everything.
That night i went out with jaime and her sister Ashley who came in from Argentina to see Jaime. We saw a samba band at a hostel and then went out in Impanema.
Well i have to go get ready because tonight is our ambassadors ball! woohooo!
oh and i am OFFICIALLY done with classes and finals. I am no longer a junior. WEIRD.

Salvador, Brazil
I know... i know... it has been awhile! but its the last week of our voyage (CRAZY I KNOW!) and i have been mobbed with work and packing and cleaning. so here is just a quick detail on what we did the first day in brazil...
We got to Brazil on Wednesday, April 21st and we were there until Sunday, April 25th. We were docked in Salvador so that day me, Jaime and Tess went out for the day in Salvador.
We took the elevator up to the upper city. Oh yea, Salvador is separated into the upper and lower city
we were docked in the lower city. Not much down there. So we took the elevator up to the upper city and went to the old city. It started monsooning so we ducked into a restaurant and grabbed some lunch. That rain was coming down so hard, now I understand why Brazil has been having all these mudslides. When it cleared up, we went to a church, Sao Francisco and went inside it. So we went into the church and it was beautiful in there
beautiful but creepy in a way. There were all these statues and each statue was like life-size of all the saints and of Jesus and Mary and Joseph. But there was beautiful blue and white tile morals. Upstairs, another creepy part, there was a statue of Jesus being crucified and there was blood pouring out of him. And then in the basement of the church there were graves! So it was definitely a little bizarre. After the church, we had to go back to the ship and grab our stuff because we were going to RIO!!!!
Our flight to Rio was about 2 hours long, and we landed around 9ish. By the time we got to our hotel
the Windsor Excelsior in Copacabana, it was close to 10 and we were all exhausted and ended up crashing. Lame I know.
and tomorrow i will fill you in about RIO!!

Ghana part 2
We just left Brazil. ☹ This is so depressing. Its our last port but it hasnt hit me yet. Like, where did the last 4 months of my life go? I have always had a countdown going until the trip but I never thought that it would end so quickly
considering it took FOREVER for it to begin. I honestly had a countdown going for like a year in advance. Ugh its just so crazy! Like when I leave this boat I really am not coming back
its not like at Monmouth where I leave for a semester or summer and I return
Im not coming back to the boat. CRAZY!
But enough about that
let me finish Ghana so I can fill you in on BRAZIL!
The 2nd night in Ghana was Jaimes 21st birthday. We stayed in a hotel where there was a casino and i gambled for my first time! and i was up! and then i lost it. Granted i also only gambled with like 20 bucks but still. I got up to as high as 40! The next day started with us laying by the pool for about an hour until check out. After laying out by the pool we decided to go to some museum that one of the tour guides at the hotel suggested. It was for the first president of Ghana. It was the most bizarre museum ever. Hahah. Like it was a park and then we walked under this statue type thing and then it was his tomb and next to that was his wifes also. And then his car was just randomly parked there. And then we went into a building and it was all pictures of him and his furniture from when he was in office. It was just very bizarre that the car that he used to drive was just parked under a tree. It was interesting though because we learned about him and we have never heard of him and our tour guide was shocked that we have never heard about him. We also have never heard about any of the leaders that were in the pictures with him. There was also a tree planted by Nelson Mandela in the park. After the museum we just went to the Accra mall for a little before going back to the ship.
The last day I went to the beach with Amy and Katie. And basically the markets came to us. Haha. There were so many vendors and people selling stuff on the beach they would just come up to us with their stuff and we didnt even have to move from our beach chairs. I went in the ocean but not far but the water was very warm! We were at the beach until about 2 when we went back to where the shuttle was to catch the 3 oclock shuttle back to the ship. In all, Ghana was really good. Im really glad I got to go there and see REAL Africa and something other than South Africa. The only sucky part though was that there was always so much driving and traffic that it was hard to do a lot in a such a short time. Each day you really only had enough time to do 1 or 2 things because it depended on what part of the country you were going to and with traffic and there was so much i still wanted to do but there was not time! But Im really glad we got to go.
So that is Ghana!
Brazil will be coming shortly.
Now I am on the ship for the next 9 days, and then to FLORIDA. This is just insane.

First half of Ghana
Tomorrow we get to Brazil!! Our last port
other than Florida. It is crazy how fast this trip is going and how we only have 2 weeks left now. And we are now 1 hour ahead of home! CRAZY But let me tell you about Ghana
Our first day in Ghana was Sunday, April 11th. Since it was a Sunday, a lot of things were closed. The first thing we did was go all over Accra (oh yea we were docked in Tema which is about 45 minutes from Accra) so we went all over Accra trying to find an ATM that accepted Mastercard. After we FINALLY found one, we went to the Accra mall because our taxi driver told us that Makola market was closed and so was the cultural center, so we went to the mall. When we were at the mall we ran into Emily and Kalee and they told us that the cultural center was actually open, so we went there. The cultural center by the way is a market in Ghana where the people sell things they made
its a bunch of crafts and tshirts. Lauren (my sister)s friend Nana told me the markets to go to but he also warned me that they are pretty intense because everyone is telling you to come to their shop. I thought I was a pro at markets though at this point because I survived the Silk Market in Beijing and Green Market Square in South Africa. Well, as soon as we got to the market, I think everyone knew our names and where we were from within 5 minutes. They were all very friendly there and wanted you to see their shops. I thought it was better than the Silk Market because at the Cultural Center they didnt hit you or grab you, but they actually taught us cool handshakes and just wanted us to look at their shops
and buy. Hahah. The one guy actually said to me (after I turned down his price), listen Christine
I tell you a price, and I know your not going to take it. You are going to get me down real low and I just give you a price because sometimes people pay the whole thing
but youre smart. I made out pretty well there. After the cultural center, it was about 3 oclock and we brought Jaime to the shuttle because she was going back to the ship and me, Steph and Tess stayed out because we were supposed to surprise Jaime at dinner that night. We went back to the mall to get some party supplies and get ready and then we went to go to the restaurant where we were supposed to meet and surprise Jaime for her dinner (she was going to be with Sarah) but guess what
Monsoon was closed!! So we didnt know what to do. We went to where the shuttle drop off was and we waited for an hour and a half waiting for the shuttle that never came
and we made friends with the security officers there. After we waited for what seemed like forever
we just decided to get some dinner and then just go back to the ship on the 9 oclock shuttle.
The next day I had to wake up very early (at like 6:30 I think) because our trip left at 7 am (or at least was supposed to). I went to the Elmina and Cape Coast Slave Castles. So yea, we were supposed to leave at 7 but the one bus was late so we ended up sitting there on the bus, waiting for the other bus, for an hour. We ended up leaving at like 8:20. It took us 3 and a half hours to get to the Cape Coast Slave Castle. Quick FYI
Obama and his family visited there when they visited Ghana in July 2009. It was pretty intense. We went into the cells and the lights were out so that we got the full effect of it and it was so hot. And the dungeon we were in would hold 1,000 slaves and there were only 20 of us in there and I thought it felt a little cramped. Places like that creep me out though too because when your in a place like that and you can feel the heat and the tour guide is telling you what they would do to the slaves just gives me an eerie feeling because you can visualize it so well. Its like when I went to the concentration camp in Austria and we went through the showers, it just gave me the eeriest feeling ever. After we came out of the dungeon, we went to the Door of No Return, which is the door that the slaves would go through and then out onto the waiting boats to bring them to the ship that would take them to the Americas. It was cool though to go through the door because on the other side, its all the local fishermen and all their boats, because the castle is located in a fishing village. We came back through the door and then went into the cell where they would put the slaves who attempted to escape and would be put in to starve to death. After Cape Coast, we went to lunch at the Elmina Resort. It was on the beach and lunch was awesome! The chicken there was so good! It looked like it was going to be spicy because it was in the red sauce but it ended up being really sweet and really good! After lunch, we went to Elmina. The Elmina Castle was built by the Portuguese back in the 1400s and is the oldest European building in Africa (I learned that in my Sacred Places class). Here we went into different dungeons again and learned that the governor (I forget of what
but he was European) actually lived in the Elmina Castle and would pick and choose which female slaves he wanted to rape. Its so sad that people can be so mean to other people. I just dont get how people thought it was okay to do this stuff. At Elmina we went to the Room of No Return, instead of the Door. There was a door there also but the slaves would wait in a tiny room before leaving through a very, very tiny door out to the awaiting ship. What was most shocking at Elmina, is that over the cell where they would put slaves that attempted to escape, was a skull and cross bones. It was the cell where they would put slaves and they would die because of the heat, and they wouldnt be given food or water. Its just so upsetting.
After Elmina we headed back to Tema and the ship. On our way back we stopped and saw a coffin shop! The coffins were so cool! They actually decorate their coffins and they arent just plane old boxes. The ones we saw were in the shape of a truck. Theres all different shapes you can get and they usually symbolize what you did in your life. For example, if you were a baker, you could get a bag of flour on it. Its so interesting! We got back to the ship at about 7:30 that night. It was a nice long day of driving but that was all of Ghana because you take local roads because they don't have huge main highways. it's a really cool way though to see all of the country
Ok actually its time for bed
Ill write more when I come back from Brazil! CRAZY!

the rest of south africa!
Sorry for the delay! I was in Ghana for 4 days and then we had classes and I just have been mobbed with work. So let me back track and get back to South Africa (aka my favorite port so far).
On the 4th day there, I was going to do a township tour. I couldnt find LB but he told me who he booked it with and for what time it was leaving so I went to the place and told them I wanted to be on it and the guy told me to meet at the circle at 1:30. I decided to go a little earlier than 1:30 to see if I saw LB but I couldnt find him and I didnt want to go on the tour by myself and I saw Kayla and all them and decided to just go out with them. We ended up doing the hop on hop off bus
which is a double decker bus that goes through out Cape Town and you get headphones. I know it totally sounds corny but it was a really cool way to see the city. We went shopping at Green Market Square
because that was one our stops When we were at Green Market square I saw our german friends from the wine tour!! It was so exciting! They were telling me what they had did since the last time I saw them. After Green Market square we just took the bus for awhile until it took us to the base of Table Mountain and then we just took a cab back to the ship because at this point it was 5 oclock. That night we went out to Long Street because it was our last night. I met up with Kelly McNulty there and that was exciting to hang out with someone from home! Shes studying abroad in Cape Town and it was just nice to see someone from home. So yea we went out with her and her 2 guy friends and went all over Long Street.
The last day we were supposed to hike and repel down Table Mountain
well
it was CANCELLED! It was waaaaay too windy out and Table Mountain was actually closed and I was PISSED! But I am happy that I at least got to go to the base of it the prior day and see the view
even if it wasnt the absolute top. Instead of hiking and repelling Table Mountain, me, Ricardo and Andrew did another trip that the tour group set up for us. We went to this canyon about an hour away and hiked that and went repelling and cliff jumping. It was an awesome trip. We drove like an hour away from Cape Town and stopped at this cute little restaurant/hotel and had breakfast there. And from there we hiked over to the place for our real hike. It was a kinda tough hike because we were climbing over rocks and we were in like a canyon. We hiked to these pools that were in the middle of the canyon and our guides Nico and Julian set up the repelling for us. We repelled I think it was 60 feet down into these pools. Omg it was the scariest thing ever!! I was shaking the whole time. And we were barefoot so I had like no grip at all and I actually slipped at one point and hit the rock with my arm but even though that sounds scary
it was so fun! Haha. I would have rather of just did a quick zip down the line then have to walk backwards and slipping on the rocks. When we got to the bottom and into the water, we had to rock climb back up to our bags
WITH NO HARNESSES! I was shaking again and I felt bad for Andrew and Ricardo because they were behind me and I was going slow. Hahah. But I was scared because as soon as we started to rock climb our leader guy slipped on the rocks and fell into the water! So yea
I was kinda nervous! When we got to the top we had lunch and then we went cliff jumping. I really did attempt to get to the 7 meter jump but again we had to rock climb and when I was climbing I slipped and decided I would not rock climb anymore and would do a 1 meter jump. Hahaha. Its pathetic I know but I did not want to risk my life. Andrew and Ricardo did the 7 and 9 meter jumps and then they actually moved onto I think it was a 24 meter jump maybe? I forget. But it was high! And I sat on the cliff and watched. Our guide was telling us that they had guys come in and scuba there to try and find the bottom and they couldn't find it. how insane is that!? Hahah. After they jumped, we hiked back down to where we started, grabbed another late lunch and headed back to Cape Town because at this point it was 3 ish. When we got back to Cape Town, Ricardo and I just did some quick shopping and then headed back to the ship. Im really glad I got out of Cape Town and saw other parts of South Africa. The people at the place we ate were so nice too. It was just nice for a new scenery.
Like I said earlier
Cape Town was my favorite port
that and Vietnam. We were talking about it tonight and Cape Town was just a good time the whole time. There was always something to do and still so much to do even though we are gone. I definitely want to go back and experience more of it. It was wonderful weather too
besides the fact it was too windy to climb Table Mountain
and where we were docked was a perfect location! I suggest everyone to visit Cape Town! It is absolutely beautiful and just so much history and culture.
Well I should probably go do some work. Its the end of the semester and of course, everything is piling up and miss procrastinator that I am needs to get on it.
Ill write about Ghana tomorrow!

South Africa III
The morning after Stellenbosch, Katie, Tess and Megan had left early because Katie and tess were running the 5K in Cape Town and Megan had a field trip. When we woke up, we had a cab coming at 10 so we sat and talked to the 2 british girls that shared our room with us. They were so cool. They were on holiday as they say and they are in med school. They were so nice and were just asking us about Semester at Sea and what else we were going to be doing in Cape Town because they had just came from there. We got our taxi at 10 back to Cape Town and our driver kept telling us to climb table mountain that day because they were calling for bad winds the other 2 days we were there. We did not listen to him because we were scheduled to hike table mountain on Sunday, our last day there. So instead we just shopped the whole day
because by the time we got back to the ship and showered and got ready for the day and waited for Katie and Tess it was close to 1 so we just decided to wander around the wharf and go to the mall and craft markets and just get our shopping in for the day. So it was a pretty chill day. That night, we had reservations for Mama Africas which is a restaurant on Long Street. We got ready pretty early and then walked out to the rocks and watched some of the sunset before heading to dinner. The inside of Mama Africas is so cute! Its decorated in like bamboo walls almost and all these African decorations. They also had a live band that night which was awesome. The singer sounded like a girl but he was actually a guy and they were playing like recent songs but with an African flare to it. Dinner was so good too! I had chicken mango kebabs and they were amazing. After dinner, we decided to call it a night early because our bodies needed a rest. So yea
that was the 3rd day...it was pretty relaxing.
We get to Ghana tomorrow and it is the first time in a long time that I am not updated on the previous port before arriving at the next and I am so sorry. Time seems to be going in fast forwarded and I don't know where my days go! I have also been trying to catch up on work also so journaling took a back seat.
Talk to you after Ghana!!

Stellenbosch
The second day began with a nice car ride at 9 am out to Stellenbosch, which is about a 40-minute drive outside of Cape Town. It’s the wine lands. Jaime’s friend did Semester at Sea last semester and told us to stay at this place called The Stumble Inn (great name right?!) and you can also do a wine tour through them and we ended up spending the night there also because it was like a combo pack to do a wine tour with them and then spend a night there. OH! I went with Katie, Tess, Jaime and Megan. Our wine tour started bright and early at 10:30 am and went until 5 pm. Long day! It was a big group of us and we were in 3 vans. There was a bunch of people from England and then people from Germany. In my van it was Katie, Jaime, Me and a German couple Adrian and I forget the girl’s name… it was a hard name to remember/pronounce. Our driver’s name was Artie and he was AWESOME! We got to the first winery and it was called Simonsig. We went to a wine cellar and got to see all the wine barrels and that was cool. We actually got to see them like making the wine and it being put into the barrells and all and saw the owner's son who like runs it now. Then we had our tasting and we learned how to be REAL wine tasters. It goes like this... you swirl, tilt the glass til the wine is about an inch from the top, smell it, take a sip, after you have the wine in your mouth you suck in a little air, swish it around your mouth so it covers all your taste buds and then you either swallow it or spit it out. It started with a white sparkling wine, and then we had a choice of 3 more wines. After that winery we went to Fairview…where I got a sticker that said.. OFFICIAL TESTER. There we got 5 more glasses and CHEESE! Now, for those who do not know me, I LOVE cheese. Kara (my sister) says I’m going to turn into a cheese quesadilla one day because i just love cheese so much and anything to do with cheese. So anyway… we had some wine there. And THE BEST cheese ever. My favorite one was the garlic and herb goat cheese. Omg amazing!!! I had like 5 cubes of it I just couldn’t stop eating it. After that we went to lunch and then to ANOTHER winery. This one was BEAUTIFUL… it just had a beautiful view of the mountains and vineyards (the Franscchhoek vineyards to be exact… I have the sheets next to me that’s how I remember all the names). This one was called Dieu Donne Vineyards and was beautiful. Here I met one of the guys in the other vans who is from Jamaica but lives in New Jersey. How crazy!! We took a lot of photos here because it was beautiful. After that vineyard… we went to our last one which I actually don’t have a sheet for and don’t know the name of. But this one was really pretty too. After this, we just went back to the Stumble Inn and took a power nap before exploring the nightlife of Stellenbosch.
Until next time!

Cape Town! part 1.
We left South Africa today about 2 hours ago. We were supposed to leave last night but it was too windy out and the port was actually closed and we could not get out. When I woke up this morning
we were still in Cape Town!! Ugh it totally sucked because it was like we were being held prisoner on the ship and all anyone wanted to do was to get off the ship. SO ANNOYING! But now we have left and are bound for Ghana.
Now let me recap South Africa
Our first day here was on Wednesday, March 31st. A bunch of us all woke up to watch the sunrise and see us pulling into the port. It was awesome. I was so excited to be there!! The sunrise wasnt too great because it was cloudy out but it was still awesome. We also saw seals when we were pulling in! I had an FDP that day that Steph came on with me and then I went to her FDP later that day. My FDP was the Three Faiths Pilgrimage for my Sacred Spaces class. It was boring but it was cool because it was a walking tour so we got to see so much of Cape Town. We went to Bo Kaap, which is the Muslim neighborhood with the brightly colored houses, and we went to a Mosque there. Kinda boring, but the houses there were so cool just because they are so brightly painted. After the mosque, we walked to a park where we saw a synagogue and walked around the park before grabbing some lunch. After lunch we went to the slave lodge where slaves lived. After that, I went to Stephs FDP which was at the planetarium which was just on the other side of the park. It was pretty cool because we learned about the southern hemisphere sky and all the constellations that we cant see at home because we are in the northern hemisphere. Did you know that there is a constellation called table mountain? Well now you do! It has
I guess you would call it a dusting of stars
like.. it looks like the milky way if you ever see it in the sky
it has like a light, dusty look to it
and that is supposed to symbolize the table cloth which is what they call the cloud that always comes over table mountain. The table cloth is an old myth about a smoking contest between a pirate and the devil. The pirate who lived on the base of Devils Peak was outside smoking a pipe when a man challenged him to smoking and they had this contest to see who could smoke the most and the pirate won and when they were down, there was a cloud that formed over table mountain. So now whenever a cloud forms over table mountain its called the table cloth and it symbolizes the smoking contest
and that is also how Devils peak got its name. And then we learned about the southern cross and the 2 pointer stars. It was pretty neat. I stargaze all the time with Steph and the only constellation I know is Orions belt. Hahah. So now I learned some more
. Even though I wont be able to see them after this trip. That FDP went until about 5:30 and then we just came back to the ship and grabbed some dinner and showered and then got ready to go out.
And that is all the time i have for tonight! More later!!

T.I.A...this is africa
Yesterday was Africa day
and like the other country days there were a bunch of seminars going on and no classes. I went to a bunch of them yesterday and it got me so excited for Africa!! I went to one about the South African playwright Athol Fugard and there we learned about his types of plays and there were a few monologues and scenes portrayed. After that, I went one about major public holidays in South Africa. This one was so cute because it was put on by all the kids and it was run by the inter port lecturers 2 kids. They acted out the reasons how the holidays came about. For example, one public holiday is Youth Day and it came about because students were killed when they protested school when their teachers were told to teach in another language than English. And another holiday had to do with the abolishing of the pass book which was used during apartheid and all black or colored people had to have one in order to move freely about the country. It was a cute presentation. After that one, I went to one about apartheid and learned more about it and then went to one that I thought was supposed to be about the FIFA world cup but really was more about the social and political standing of south Africa
at the end though we did talk about the world cup.
Last night I got a tad bit seasick. It was not fun. Because of where we are which is near the cape of Africa, the currents are crashing into each other and the Atlantic is meeting the Pacific so the oceans were rough last night. I ended up getting a Ginger Ale with Amy and we sat in the piano bar and talked for about 2 hours.
This morning I woke up and was walking to breakfast when I looked out on the deck and saw the coast of Africa!! Ahhh we are so close yet so far! I just want to get there already! I just want to swim there and meet the ship in Cape Town.
And so now, well for the past 2 days, Ive been on a Dave Matthews kick because for those of you that didnt know this
South Africa is Dave Matthewss homeland. And I cant wait to be there!!
Celebrate we will, for life is short but sweet for certain.Dave Matthews

Mauritius
We left Mauritius wednesday night. Very upsetting. For everyone who doesnt know, Mauritius is off the coast of Madagascar. We got there on tuesday and left wednesday
a very short time, but it was a great time. It was also our spring break. So when we got there me, Katie, Tess and Emily went to Grand Baie which is the north-west part of the island and it was pouring! It was so depressing because everyone kept saying it was going to rain all day but thankfully it did end up clearing up. We got to our hotel and got ready for the beach and waited for the skipper to come and get our deposit for the catamaran. We grabbed some lunch before going to the beach.
We were walking down the beach when we saw some very comfy lounge chairs and decided to park it right there. We then went swimming and the water was WONDERFUL! It was crystal clear and warm and felt amazing! We laid on the chairs, and then realized that we were at a resort and everyone around us had the same towels, besides us. But as we were sitting on the chairs, a security officer walked past us and goes, how are you girls today? Is everything alright? and we were like
uhh yea everythings great! so you know that if a security guard asks you if its ok, then you are totally fine. So we just laid on the lounge chairs but then I woke up to security officers talking around me and Katie was whispering to me telling me that she thought that the security officers caught on to us and were going to kick us out. But they didnt and we just kept sleeping. It started raining when we were sleeping, and we woke up and ran up to the resort, where we decided we wanted to go swimming in their infinity pool. So basically we crashed a resort and no one cared. We even went up to the front desk and asked for stamps, where they sent us to the store, where we shopped around for a little. After that it was about 5 oclock and we decided to head back to our hotel, La Ventura. Oh! In the beginning of the day when we were waiting for the skipper to come and get our deposit we went to the bar at the hotel and were having some drinks and they actually had to run out and buy more rum because they are not used to getting tourists there. And then at lunch, we asked if they had bread, and the lady said they did, and then she ran out and bought us a loaf of bread! The people in Mauritius were very nice.
And me and Katie were out talking to the hotel manager about what to do and where to go and he (his name was Chris by the way and he was actually on Semester at Sea a couple years ago as an interport student) told us where to go and actually arranged transportation for us and walked us to dinner because there were like no sidewalks and it was dark out. After dinner we just went out for a little bit.
The next morning we woke up really early because we were going on a Catamaran and we had to go meet it at the Public Beach which was about a 15-20 minute walk from our hotel. We FINALLY got on the catamaran and I was just as happy as a clam. It was absolutely breathtaking. The scenery there is beautiful and the water is just such a deep blue that its just awesome. We docked in the middle of the ocean to go snorkeling and it was awesome! . After snorkeling
we had a bbq lunch and it was amazing! We had I forget what type of fish but it was sooooo good ( and Im not much of a fish eater), pasta salad, grilled chicken, and some type of vegetables. And then there was a fruit salad which was amazing also. After lunch, we all pretty much crashed. But before we passed out we had a huge dance party... in the middle of the ocean... in Mauritius. it can't get any better than that. . We got back to Port Louis at about 4 pm and on ship time was 6 so we just walked around a little before heading back to the ship. I wish we had more time in Mauririus. There was so much more I wanted to see. I wish we had just one more day so that I could explore around Port Louis more. And it sucks because it is such a hard place to get to but I would so go back if I could. It was considered our spring break too so it was a nice place to just go and relax and not feel obligated to go see something there
like seeing shrines in Japan, great wall in China and etc.
and now we are on our way to South Africa!!! I CANNOT wait! it is the port that i've been looking forward to the most. we get there on wednesday and we leave on Easter... lots to do in a short amount of time.

Neptune Day
Today was Neptune Day! That means that we crossed the equator. We actually crossed the equator yesterday at 2:45 am but we celebrated Neptune Day today. I am proud to say that I am no longer a pollywog and am now a shellback. The day started by being woken bright and early by whistles and drumming and banging on our door at around 7:30 am. The festivities started at 8:45 at the pool. Crabtree (our dean) was dressed as Neptune (god of water and sea) and the other faculty were dressed up as the court of Neptune. We were then interrogated and we answered questions and then we took part of the initiation. It started with getting slimed (it smelled sooooo bad), then we jumped in the pool, climbed out of it, kissed a REAL fish
a REAL, DEAD fish and then we kissed Neptunes ring, his wifes ring, then we were anointed by Gogniat (our Global Studies professor) that we were shellbacks. When I got to the fish
I thought it was a fake one, until I realized the blood of it was dripping down Cindys hands and I just looked at her and was like, wait
I have to kiss that? Like my lips have to actually touch it? and she laughed at me and I did. But yea, so now Im a shellback. Hahah. Afterwards, people were shaving their heads because that is another thing you can do. I did not shave my head. Because I do not want to look like a q-tip for the next 7 years of my life. But lots of people did shave their heads, girls included. If they didnt shave their heads, they donated it to locks of love or chopped it really short or buzzed it instead of going COMPLETELY bald. After that, I just laid out all day and then we had a bbq for dinner, which was amazing. Tonight we had our talent show and its crazy how talented people on this ship are.
Well I must go. I guess I should start attempting to study for Global Studies since the test is tomorrow and all. Peace out Pollywogs!

Cochin
Today
we leave India
and Asia...and we are officially more than halfway done. Its so depressing. But lets not get ahead of ourselves here. So let me back track to the past 2 days in Cochin.
I enjoyed Cochin much more than Chennai. Cochin was less crowded and less city like and was more tropical
it actually kind of reminded me of Vietnam with all the palm tree like trees. The first day in Cochin I had the Khatakali Dance Drama trip for my human voice in performance class. Our bus was supposed to leave at 8 but we had to go through immigration so we didnt leave until closer to 9. It was about a 3 hour bus drive to the village we went to. On this bus ride, at our pit stop, I encountered an Indian toilet
aka a hole in the ground. Oh the toilets I have experienced on this trip so far are ones to remember
the heated seats in Japan with bidets, squatters in China and India, and the Great Wall
Such great toilets. But anyway! When we got to the village we met our guide Kunju and he showed us to his fathers house. When we got off the bus, there was a photographer there and cameraman there and they were with us the whole day
I felt like I was on the real world / famous. Quick background on Kunju
he owns a temple in the village we were at, and he teaches Khatakali dance and he has a mutual friend with my professor and that is how we got to go on this trip. So we went to Kunjus dads house (who was a Khatakali professor also before handing it down to Kunju) and we had coconut milk and some really good baked fruit with him. After we left his dads house, we walked a little bit through the village (which was so cute! It was literally like a little road with little dirt roads off it that led to individual houses). We walked through the village to a little place where they made grass mats. This village is apparently known for their grass mats and we watched them make them and they are beautiful!
After the grass mats, we went to Kunjus uncles house where they cooked lunch for us! We ate it the traditional way aka on banana leaves with all 5 of our fingers on our right hand. It was spicy! Im also a baby when it comes to spices so my mouth was basically on fire and this one older man was standing next to me laughing at me. And he also laughed at me because I was only using 3 of my fingers instead of all 5 so he taught me the right way to eat it and mix everything they put on your leaf into 1 big thing and eat that. I think I got more food on me than in my mouth because I kept missing my mouth when I was attempting to shove the food into it.
After lunch, we walked across the street to the temple and saw the actors getting ready for the performance. They were putting their make up on and putting their costumes on and it was INSANE! Ok, so Khatakali tells a story and is usually performed from dusk til dawn, but we had our own private 2 hour show. And it is dancing, but it is more movement in the face and eyes and handgestures than dancing around the stage. Also, depending on the color make up the actor is wearing tells you if they are a good guy or bad guy. Green = good guy /diety and red = bad guy. Whats so cool though is that their make up is so bright and vibrant but they also but a little seed in their eyes that make their eyes bright red and it sticks out so well against the green makeup. Its so cool. So we watched the show for 2 hours and then afterwards we met the actors and got to ask them a bunch of questions. After that we toured the temple and then headed back to the ship. We got back to the ship around 9:30ish and I grabbed some food and then just showered and crashed.
Today I had a really good day. Me, Andrew and Stephanie rented a rickshaw driver and he took us all around Cochin but we had to be back by 12ish because we had a trip at 1. Our rickshaw drivers name was Anu and he was awesome. Our rickshaw was pimped out too. The whole inside of it was red and blue leopard print. It looked like it was on Pimp My Rickshaw. But anyway
we stopped at a palace which is now a museum, a shop where I bought so many scarves and our guy that was showing us stuff in the shop actually brought us upstairs to the 4th floor which was a lookout and we got a free soda and just chatted with him and learned about Cochin and everthing. After that shop, we stopped at a ginger factory where we helped sift through the ginger, then we stopped at another store, then a post office and then we stopped at a random street and just walked down it and looked at the shops and then headed back to the ship. After lunch, we had our SOS Childrens Village trip. The Childrens village is kind of like an orphanage and there are 50 houses and they all have a mother who takes care of about 15 kids. When we got to the village we watched a video about the village and what it was and then we saw performances by the kids. After that we got to visit the homes and this little girl came up to me and grabbed my hand and took me to a house where we met up with Christina and 2 other little girls and then my girl took me and the 2 other little girls to her house. I didnt know my little girls name because she didnt really talk / understand English. But her mother was so nice and was showing me all her pictures of all the children and past children she had that got married and are now psychologists or in hotel management, and a lot of the pictures she had on the walls were all of my little girl. It was so nice. After that, we went to the field where everyone was playing cricket and soccer and just met more kids and played with them. It was one of my favorite trips. It was just fun to give back and make these childrens day by just hanging out with them and spending 2 hours with them. After that we just came back to the ship because we leave tonight. Actually, we left already. And we are now headed for Mauritius! Woohoo!
India was definitely eye opening. And I know I was dreading it in the beginning but it really wasnt that bad. Its one of those places that you get so overwhelmed in for the first couple minutes but once you stop and breathe and slow down, its not that bad and it is a beautiful country. Its just so different. Even going from Chennai to Cochin, I saw 2 very very very different types of places. Chennai was more industrial and city like where as Cochin was more tropical and not as crowded. But yea
were done India and done Asia. Now for AFRICA! I CANNOT wait for South Africa. Its going to be so cool.

Chennai
We got to India on Thursday, and the first half of the day I went around with Neha and her grandmom and a group of us. We went to lunch where we had simosas (a fried pastry filled with potatoes, peas and its a little spicy), garlic naan (which is like a bread) and pashmeer (?) I forget what its called but we had a bunch of different kinds. We had spinach, potatoes and peas, and I dont know what the red one was. I just ate everything and tried everything and my mouth was on fire a little but it was really good. It was so funny because the place we went to go eat didnt have any simosas so Nehas grandmom had someone run to another restaurant and get them for us! Neha said thats just what you have to do in India. After that, we drove around Chennai and stopped at 2 shops and went shopping, where her gradmom got us discounts everywhere. Her grandmom is awesome. And she is like pretty legit. She is a top social worker and has an orphanage and womens college in Hyderabad and was actually given a reward from Mother Theresa. So she is pretty legit. At around 3 they dropped us off at the boat because they had to catch a flight to Hyderabad and that is where Neha is now actually.
After we got dropped off, we rented a car and driver until 10 pm (it was only like 10 dollars
the field office set it up for us) to take us to a bunch of places. We went to a Hindu temple and it had 10,000 figures on it! And they are so bright and colorful. Funny story, after the temple, I was standing at our car and we were waiting for a bus that was blocking us in to move, and these little school kids walked past me and said hi and this one little boy goes, whats your name? so I told him and he told me his and then he goes
10 ruppees? and I laughed at him and the girls he was with laughed and just shook their heads and drug him away because they knew he wasnt a beggar and I wasnt going to give him anything anyway. After the temple, we went to Spencers plaza, which is a mall there with a bunch of different shops and vendors. After Spencers we went to Mocha which is a Hookah bar but we went to just get dinner and dessert
which was amazing. After that, we just went back to the ship because a lot of people I was with had trips the next morning at like 3 am.
On Friday, I lucked out and got a free field trip ticket from Patty for a vegetarian cooking demonstration. That wasnt until 4 though, so I went around with Allison C and Steph (not the Steph I am usually with, a different one) and we went to an outdoor bazaar. We encountered beggars there too, but the beggars here are women and they hold their kids with them, which we learned during diplomatic debriefing that the women sedate their kids so it looks like their worse than they are. It got to the point that we would just go into random stores to get away from them. We got lunch at this place and I had dosa, which is like a crepe, I had it plain and I just dipped it in the different types of chutney
my favorite one was the green chutney. By the time we were done at lunch and shopping it was about 1:30ish, and we decided to go back to the ship to shower and get ready for the trip. Our trip was awesome. We basically met Indias version of Rachel Ray and she cooked for us and taught us how to make everything and then we ate with her. The food was amazing. Indian food has so much flavor in it its ridiculous. If I were to become a vegetarian, I would move to India. After that, we just came back to the ship because on time ship time was 8.
I didnt do any independent traveling in India to the Taj or anything because I have an FDP the first day in Cochin (tomorrow) to the Khatakali Dance Drama and that is at 7:45 am. The past 2 days at sea though were AWESOME! A lot of people arent here because they are on trips. It felt like a real cruise the past 2 days. I laid out all day both days and did some reading. And for dinners we have sit down dinners where they serve us. Last night they played Benjamin Buttons in the union and I went to go watch that. Today I just worked out and laid out all day and it was magnificent. I wasnt too upset about missing the Taj though. Nehas grandmom when we left her told us to come to Hyderabad and I told her that Ill come back to India soon and call her up and visit her. India isnt that bad of a country. Its definitely different. Its also the first port Ive been too and not know how to get around within a couple hours. The other ports you could distinguish landmarks and walk places and somewhat know where your going, but in Chennai, I had no idea. Each time I went out it just looked different. Its hot, dirty, smelly but it is a pretty country (from what Ive seen so far). The temples here are beautiful and not something you see any where else. Im excited to get to Cochin, Im doing the dance drama and the 2nd day Im doing a service visit to the Childrens village.
Well I have to go get ready for dinner!

final day in Vietnam
Im finally to my last day in Vietnam! We get to India tomorrow! Ok
so back to the final day in Vietnam
I went to the Mekong Delta on a SAS trip...Amy and Megan were in my group. Our trip left at 8 and we drove about 2 hours to a temple where there was a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE Buddha! There were 2 of them actually. The one was the typical fat, sitting Buddha and the other one was tall and skinny. After walking around that, we got back on the bus and then went to the delta where we took a boat to cross the river. After we crossed the river, we went and saw people making coconut candy and how its made and we got to try it and buy it if you wanted. I bought 6 things of it because it was only for a dollar! When we were done buying candy, we walked to a horse-wagon, which is a wagon that holds 4 people attached to a horse and the horse took us on a little 10 minute drive through the town to the next place we were going. The next place we went to was a like a sidewalk with vendors on either side but then there was a outdoor picnic type area where we got to taste honey and tea and all different types of fruits. There was pineapple, papaya, mini bananas, and a bunch of other fruits that I dont know what they are called. One was red and spikey on the outside, but when you cut the skin away it was sweet with a pit in the middle of it. There was also a HUUUUUUUGE snake there in a cage. And then the lady took the lid off the cage and it started sliding out of the cage. After that, we took a tiny boat that holds 4 people and our rower and went down the delta. It was beautiful. The water was a little gross and muddy though. And there were a few times that I thought we were going to take water on because we were so low in the water and were rocking a little. Other than that thought it was beautiful. After going down the river we got onto a bigger boat where it took us to where we were having lunch. Oh lunch that day. It was definitely interesting. I wish I knew how to post pictures on this so I could show you what was placed in the middle of the table
but I will try to explain it as best as I can. It was an elephant ear fish. And it was whole, and fried, and being supported by 2 prongs, and it was staring at me. When I say it was whole, I mean it still had its fins and scales on its face. And the lady came over and sliced it and made us some fresh grilled elephant ear fish spring rolls. And guess what
I ATE IT! I know
I know
for those of you who know my picky eating habits will be shocked. I was the first person at my table to try it. It was interesting. It didnt taste fishy though but it definitely had a weird texture and taste to it. One was enough for me! But then the lady made me another one, and I took one bite of it and then she walked away and I stopped eating it. The next course was pretty good. It was what I thought was deep fried mashed potatoes almost. But in a French fry form I guess. I dont know its hard to explain
and then there were fried spring rolls. We also had jumbo shrimp, crunchy noodles with vegetables and then it ended with a pork hot pot (which is like soup). After lunch, we got on the bus and headed back to Saigon. We got dropped off at the Rex Hotel, and me, Amy and Megan went to go pick up Amys dress. We then went to the market to attempt to get sunglasses but were unsuccessful and then ate at Pho 2000 which is where Bill Clinton ate when he visited Vietnam. After that, we just headed back to the ship because we had to be back on the ship by 8.
So there you have it! My time in Vietnam
I think it tops the other countries so far. And I definitely want to go back and explorer northern Vietnam. Other than that
we get to India tomorrow and Im not as nervous anymore. I think it will be interesting and definitely eye-opening and shocking but hey
thats what this whole trip is about. Its about learning new things and being pushed outside your comfort zone
and I have done that a lot so far. I have done things that I would never do
such as eat elephant ear fish. India will definitely be an experience.

Cao Dai and Cu Chi Tunnels
My fourth day in Vietnam, which was March 1st, started at 8 am. Me and Steph were on a SAS trip to the Cao Dai temple and Cu-Chi tunnels. The Cao Dai temple was about a 3 hour drive from Saigon where I got some sleep in and also stared out the window. We were finally outside the city and it was so pretty! Rice paddies were everywhere, and the people working in them all had their rice hats on (the pointy hats that are round) and it looked like the essence of Viet Nam. We got lunch before visiting the temple at a restaurant near the temple. We had fried spring rolls (amazing), chicken legs, noodles with vegetables, bread and soup. I think there was more but I forget. After that, we went to the temple around 12 because we were going to watch a service there. Services in a Cao Dai temple take place at 6 am, noon, 6 pm, and midnight
EVERYDAY! Caodaiism is a combination of religions almost. They are based on Buddha, saint and sage (I totally wiki-ed that). Their symbol is the left eye in a triangle and that symbolizes the divine eye. The temple itself is interesting. It is bright! It is in colors of yellow, blue, red and white. And it is very detailed and decorative. There is so much going on in the temple that its hard to explain all the interior designs. We watched the service, where they are dressed in white (some in blue, some in red and some in yellow also)
and they all kneel on the ground and bow at certain times, and in the back of the temple on the 2nd floor there is a group singing and playing music. Its interesting. After the service, we were waiting outside for some to go to the bathroom and a man came up to me and Steph and started talking to us. He was Vietnamese and had such good English! And he was explaining the outside of the temple to us, and how apparently in one of the pillars at the top, there was a body of one of the followers I think. He told us how he went to university and that was where he learned his English, but he is a motorbike taxi driver.
After the temple, we drove about an hour to Cu Chi where we went to the Cu Chi tunnels. The Viet Cong used the tunnels during the war and they lived down there. When we got there we watched a movie that was the Vietnamese side of the war. It was talking about many people from the town of Cu Chi and how they killed Americans and how many each one killed and how they were giving awards for doing it. After that, we toured the area and we came to one place and our guide uncovered a trap door! It was just chilling in the middle of the ground and it was covered by leaves and no one knew it was there. I thought we were just stopping there to make sure everyone was with us until this guide took the lid off. The guide then got in and showed how the Viet Cong had used it and you couldnt even tell it was there when he disappeared into the ground. It was insane! Then we each tried it and I was hesitant at first because it was so tiny but I did it. And it led down to a network of tunnels but all we did was go down and then pop right back up. It smelled so bad down there. Wow
sorry this is random but on my iTunes the song Turn! Turn! Turn! By the Byrds just came on. And it reminds me of American Dreams and this song was playing when JJ left for the Vietnam War. I remember stupid things like that. But anyway!
After that, we walked around some more and saw all the different type of booby traps they used in the war and it was insane! There were so many different types
ones that your foot would go through a nail and be stuck in a cage, some that you would fall through and land on bamboo spikes
just so many
and that was so upsetting because of course, behind the booby traps are paintings of Americans falling into each one and how it hurts them
granted the paintings were more cartoon-ish and not as realistic but it was still upsetting. After that, we went to another station there and saw how they made weapons. Then, we finally got to a network of tunnels and were able to climb through them. It was 100 meters long (you could stop at any set of steps during that 100 meters and get out) and it was sooooo small and dark and I got a little claustrophobic but I did all 100 meters of it! I was luckily behind a girl with a flashlight so me and Steph stayed close to her. After that, you could shoot guns at the shooting range if you wanted. I chose not to because that is not something I am interested in. I just thought it was so weird too that your at this war memorial type place yet they encourage you to go shoot AK 47s and all. After people shot guns, we just went back to the bus and came back to the ship around 5ish. I was EXHAUSTED after that day. OH! And by the way.. my stupid camera broke! I was looking at pictures on the bus before we got to the temple
and then when I turned my camera on to take pictures the screen was completely black! It still takes pictures but I just cant see what Im taking pictures of. It s such a bummer because I still have like 2 months left and no camera! But I plan on being a very skilled photographer by the end of the trip. Haha.
But I must go. Im going to an explorer seminar that Neha is in and it is about arranged marriages which Im excited to learn about! Wow, I sounded like a nerd right there.

Sea Olympics and Vietnam Day 3
Yesterday was Sea Olympics, and the Red Sea won. I am not the Red Sea
Im the Caribbean. Opening games were Saturday night, and it was when each team brought their banner in and did their cheer. On Sunday, I went to breakfast and then went to sea feud for a little before crab soccer. Our team did so good but ended up coming in 4th
and it was such a sucky game to end on. It went into overtime and the Adriatic sea beat us on such a sucky goal. We had the ball and went to clear it but a Adriatic sea guy was there and kicked it right back in. It sucked but our team did awesome. At lunch time we were in 4th, and then it all went down hill from there. My event was Dean White Says, which is Simon Says. And I came in first in the first heat! Which meant that I was in the finals. And in the finals, I came in 3rd and got our team points! So at least I contributed a little bit. Dinner last night was AMAZING! It was a bbq! With hamburgers, ribs (which were amazing), potato salad, corn on the cob and lots of fruit. It was the best dinner yet. Then everyone
almost everyone
got into the pool.
I did not. Do you know how many diseases were probably spread?! Haha. This one kid on my team was like.. ew, I am not getting in, its like a cest pool in there. Which is sooo true.
Ok so let me get back to Vietnam since I havent finished that yet.
My third day was spent with Erica, Ryan, and Megan. We went to the War Museum. The museum didnt have so many artifacts but instead, lots of pictures. There were pictures of everything. Actually, I lied. It did have artifacts. It had a plane and tank and helicopter all out in the front yard of it, and then inside it had a bunch of bombs and gun shells and all that stuff. But there were more pictures than artifacts. Some pictures were very gruesome. There were pictures of guys holding Vietcong heads, all the birth deformities from Agent Orange, napalm burns, and destruction of everything. There was one section of the museum that I thought was very interesting, and it was photographers from the Vietnam War and their pictures displayed. A lot of the pictures there were shown in newspapers during the wartime, and the one photographers collection was in TIME magazine during the war. There was also a section there that was all about the protestors of the war. And this section
uh
I guess I got upset in? I dont know how to explain how I felt in that section of the museum. I guess what it came down to was that I felt like the protestors were
mean? I dont know, I cant explain it. I guess what Im trying to say is that they werent just protesting the war but they were protesting and disrespecting the soldiers and that was what made me upset. I mean, protest the war all you want, but dont hate on the guys that are over there. sorry about my little rant there.
There was one section of that area that it showed pictures of 3 men and it had a story under each man. And want to know what their story was? It was that they had each doused themselves in gasoline, and lit themselves on fire in front of different government buildings to protest going to the war.
They left their families and wives FOREVER, instead of just their term in Vietnam. It just shocked me. Thats the thing that I loved about Vietnam though
it shocked me. Everything about it was a huge shock
culturally, the landscape, the people and how friendly they were (after coming from China where they shove you and cut you in line, Vietnam was awesome), and all the people! But anway
back to my day.
After the museum, we grabbed some lunch. Since we were with Ryan and she had never had Pho yet, we went to Pho 24 again. This time I got beef pho and it was better than chicken pho. So if anyone is in Vietnam anytime soon, beef pho, with the filet meat cooked well done, is AMAZING. And get the iced coffee with sweet condensed milk. When we were at Pho 24, we sat with a couple who had gone to school in the United States but were from Vietnam. I believe he said he went to LSU. And he asked where we were all from and he knew every mascot to the places we were from. After that we went to the markets for a little and then got some frozen yogurt. Then Ryan and Erica went back to the markets and me, Megan and this girl I forget her name, went to get some coffee. When walking back to the market to meet Erica and Ryan, I saw the man again with the burned face. This time though, I did not see him until I felt a brush on my leg and realized it was his hat that swiped past my leg and he was sitting on the curb asking for money. And if I wasnt so shocked at first, I would have given him money
considering how much dong I have left (Vietnam is a crazy cheap country and I took out too much money and have so much left now). But I would have gave him money anyway because Im such a nice person. After the market we just headed back to the ship and grabbed dinner before going to the night markets. Tons of shopping I did in Vietnam and Im not even that big of a shopper! The night markets are the same as the day markets, but just more clothes and no DVDs. After the night markets I just came back to the ship and didnt go out or anything because I had to be up early because I had a field trip the next day to the Cao-Dai temple and cu chi tunnels
.which I will right about later tonight because I am going to go to dinner!

Tomorrow is sea Olympics which Im really excited for! I am in Dean White Says, which is simon says but Mark White is Simon. I hope to beast it. Tonight was the opening ceremony and we already have negative points because we were unsportsmanlike. We cant help it that we are the biggest sea and they gave us a very tiny section in the union and we took over another seas seating area and then sang, na na na na, na na na na, hey hey hey, goodbye to them. Im so hype for it. The winner of sea Olympics gets bragging rights and are the first off the ship when we dock in Florida
which is exciting but depressing at the same time. I dont want to think about Florida yet, we arent even half way done yet! And I dont want it to be thinking about it any sooner than I have to. But everyone is already talking about when to get their flights home and everything. Oh, by the way
my sea is the Caribbean sea, and our color is purple, and we are the Purple Pirates. SPEAKING of pirates
how about the Somalian pirates hijacking a oil thing off the coast of Madagascar! Uhh
HELLO! We are going to Mauritius, which is off the coast of Madagascar, and we already changed our itinerary to get away from the pirates (our original itinerary was to go to Egypt, Morocco, Italy, Turkey, then end in England) and they changed it to avoid the coast of Somalia. I feel like this whole trip though, we are just missing everything. Like, we missed that storm that hit the west coast, we went out of our way to miss a storm on the way to Japan, there was a tsunami warning for Hawaii and Japan just a couple days ago, and now pirates! How funny!
but i must go and rest up for my big game of Dean White Says tomorrow! hahaha.

Vietnam part 2
Day 2 in Vietnam started bright and early
aka 10 oclock ish. Hahah. That day it was me, Sarah and Megan. We decided we were going to go to the market first and then go to the beach which was apparently nearby (according to Sarah) but it wasnt. It was like an hour boat ride up the river. So we went to the market anyway. And when we were walking there we were crossing the street and a man was walking towards me and I thought I was seeing things because it was hot out and I thought maybe I was dehydrated
but as he got closer I saw that my eyes were not lying and his face was in fact all burned. He had no lips, his eyelids drooped all the way down
and it sounds mean but I dont know how to explain it besides he basically didnt have a face. Like it was there, but it was just all burned away. And it was so upsetting. It wasnt something I was ready for. And he like walked right up to me and I stepped away and he said something but I think he was just begging for money and I felt so bad and wanted to cry just right then and there.
I also wasnt ready for the markets. Its so hot in there and small walkways and the smells in there in some sections are overwhelming. There is like a market in one section of it and we wandered onto it and there was meat and fish and dried shrimp everywhere and the smell was not pleasant at all. After the market we stopped to get a bottle water and we encountered another person with a deformity I guess you would say? Well whatever you would call it, the man had no arms and had planks of wood from the elbow down. And also in the market there was a man with no legs just chilling there in the walkway. Like I said before, Vietnam was the first place I felt like a foreign country, and I dont think I was prepared enough
I didnt think people would still be so affected by the war as they still are. And that was shocking to me. But its still such a beautiful country and the people there are very nice
or at least the ones I encountered were.
After the markets we were wandering and stopped and got some lunch at Pho 24. I got Pho Ga again, hoping that it would be better than the night before and it was! It was much, much better than the night before! I also got fried spring rolls that had pork and mushroom in them with fish sauce to dip them in and they were amazing also! The food in Vietnam was just amazing. When we were at Pho 24 we ran into Eric, Ngyuen (pronounced Wing, he is the Vietnam inter-port student) and some other kid whose name I dont know. And we asked Ngyuen what to do and he started listing things to do and he told us to go to the zoo and botanical gardens which we ended up doing. We met up with another girl who came with us to the zoo. And it was so fun to be at a zoo, especially in a different country. I saw elephants, monkeys, bears, ostriches (which are sooooo ugly), hippos, a regular tiger and white tigers, apes, rhinos, zebras and giraffes. When we were in the zoo we got asked to have our picture taken. I dont get why they wanted a picture with us because we literally looked like hot messes. I had chocolate down my white t from my ice cream cone, we were all sweating profusely, and we all had our make up smeared all over our t-shirts from wiping our faces. Who knows, they probably just wanted a picture with us to make fun of the way we looked. Hahaha.
After the zoo, we went back to the ship and went swimming and laid our for a little. We grabbed some dinner and then got ready to go out.
Today we are actually docked in Singapore. We didn't get to get off the ship, we are just refueling here. It looks like a pretty place though! haha. because we stopped here, we lost an hour of sleep which totally sucks, but luckily we gain it back very soon. Hopefully tomorrow night. haha. I'm just so glad that we always gain an hour instead of always losing one.

Vietnam part 1 of many
After Hong Kong we had 2 days at sea until we got to Vietnam
or should I say
Viet Nam. In Vietnam they spell it 2 words and it means living in the southeast of Asia. I learned that from my tour guide. In our Global Studies classes those two days we learned about Vietnam. We learned about the history, economy, and culture. On the second day we learned about the Vietnam War. We had a panel discussion and it was our security guard (he was drafted into the war), Dr. Isreal who protested the war, and another professor (Kolbe) who was in the air force in the war. It was emotional
I guess you would say. I dont know
I guess when grown men cry it usually gets me. Dr. Isreal
even though he was a protestor wasnt one of those protestors that burned their draft card, or lit themselves on fire or spit on returning soldiers, he was a more civil one. Prof. Kolbe was telling us about the one guy he fought with Michael Blassie and how he was the soldier in the tomb of the Unknown Soldier in D.C. They did a test and found out it was him and then sent his remains home to his family.
ANYWAY
enough depressing stuff
now onto Vietnam!
Vietnam was the first place I felt like I was in a foreign country. Sure, China and Japan had foreign characters and different food and we stuck out like a sore thumb there, but they reminded me so much of New York City and of home. Vietnam was literally a jungle with a mini city plopped into it. We got to Vietnam on Friday, February 26th and where we docked we had to go up the river to dock in Ho Chi Minh. Going up the river was so cool! There were trees on either side but the river was very dirty. My first day in Saigon, I had a water puppet theater show to see for my human voice in performance class. It was really neat. A water puppet show is when like, there is a stage but its water, and there is a curtain and the puppeteers are behind the curtain in the water, which is up past their waist and they control the puppets from behind. The theater was outside which was awesome and it was a very small area which made you feel like you were part of the show. There were dragons with firecrackers in their mouths, ducks, swimming puppets, and dancing puppets. It was a cool thing to see. We were done there by like 12 and went back to the ship and grabbed some lunch before setting out and exploring the city. That day it was me, Alison B, and Chi-chi. We were wandering the city and decided we wanted to get massages and then go to the markets. We were walking down this sketch alley where this hotel concierge told us to go for cheap massages and we found a place called Roses. We ended up getting a 75-minute massage for 15 dollars. And it was AMAZING. The lady literally cracked every bone in my body and it felt so good.
After our massage it was after 4 and we wanted to get back to the ship by 5ish. The nice thing is that we had a free shuttle the whole time we were there that went from our ship to the Rex Hotel and it left the ship every half hour. We took the shuttle back and then just got ready for the night and then went out. Thats pretty much my whole first day in Saigon. Ill write more tomorrow!
Oh, tomorrow we actually dock in Singapore for a couple hours to refuel the ship but we don't get to get off which sucks. and today while i was lifting this morning i saw like a school of jumping fish! it was so cool!

Hong Kong Part 2
Hello, hello! Sorry it took me so long to update but we just left Vietnam this morning at about 7 am. On ship time was last night at 8 pm though. I know I am HARDCORE slacking in everything and now that we have a stretch of 7 days from Vietnam to India, I will update a lot a lot.
But first
let me finish with Hong Kong before I move onto Vietnam (which I loved loved loved love LOVED!)
Our 2nd and last day in Hong Kong was on February 23rd. It started bright and early (about 10 am Hahah). Me and Jamie decided to go to Victorias Peak. Victorias Peak was on Hong Kong Island (our ship was docked on Kowloon) and it has a great view of all of Hong Kong. We took the Peak Tram all the way up it and it was like going up a log flume. We got to the top and just wandered around taking in the views and taking lots of pictures. Jamie even got asked to get her picture taken with someone and it was very very funny. While we were up there we decided to grab some lunch before heading back down the tram.
When we got off the Peak Tram we went to SoHo. (South of Hollywood Road). We were walking the streets when this girl passed us with frozen yogurt and instantly wanted some. The frozen yogurt place was like 2 steps later and we went in there and got some. I got half vanilla and half original tart with crushed oreos on it and it was really good. After we got our frozen yogurt we found the escalators that take you to Mid-Levels and just took them all the way up to mid-levels. Once we got up there, we just wandered around taking everything in. While wandering, we stumbled across a Wet market! We walked up and down that and this time I wasnt as grossed out by them as I was the first day in Japan. When we emerged from the wet market, we decided to head back to the ship because it was probably around 2ish and we wanted to use the internet before on ship time. The bad part about this was that we had NO idea where we were because we had literally wandered from mid-levels down to I dont even know where. I whipped out my handy map and we sat at this little park to figure out where we were and to find a subway station. Little did we know, we were sitting right across the street from a subway station! Lucky us. So yea, we just grabbed that, came back to the ship to use the internet and then we pulled out of Hong Kong at 8 as the light show was going on which was pretty cool. Hong Kong was one of my favorite stops so far. There was still so much that I wanted to do there but didnt have enough time to do. That saying, theres not enough hours in the day is sooooo true. There is so much that I want to do in each port that it is close to impossible to do it all.
But yea, that was my Hong Kong adventure and I will update about Vietnam very very soon
. Maybe even later today.

Hong Kong Part 1
I know... I know... a double post in the same night! so here it goes....
My first day in Hong Kong started VERY early with a Skype call to my family! I met them at 7:30 am (6:30 pm their time) and my Poppy was there! It was nice to see familiar faces and see my house and Gracie! Im so glad I missed out on all the snow and was sitting in beautiful weather in Hong Kong. It was the first time I talked to my family since Hawaii so it was nice. Its so weird to think that we only have 10 weeks left of this trip! 10 weeks! Thats so little time! I feel like we just got here but we are almost half way through! Its crazy to think and I am trying not to think about it actually. Haha. After Skype-ing with my family, I went in and grabbed some breakfast and then started my day. We met in Tymitz Square around 9:30 and started our day.
We went to the wet market where there were so many fish and all this produce. That was really cool to walk through and it is where people get their fresh produce. Ryan bought 2 oranges and I had a piece and it was sooooo good! After the wet market, we headed over to the jade market and did some bargaining. After the jade market, we went to the Tin Shua temple. It has a bunch of incense in it and I could only be in there for like 5 minutes before I got a raging headache and had to leave and sat on a park bench by myself. After the temple we went to the Modern Toilet Restaurant. Its where you sit on toilets at a tub-table and you order food and the food comes out in a urinal or toilet or tub or sink. Its pretty funny. After lunch we went to the fish street. Its a street with a bunch of fish in baggies outside the stores and its like a whole street. After that we went to the bird park where old men bring their birds in their cages and hang them up and the birds sing to one another. Hahaha its definitely a sight to see. Im not a fan of birds but it was cool. After the bird street we all headed back to the ship but me and Ricardo left and went to the Avenue of the stars which is where all the Asian stars have their stars and hand-prints.
After that we just headed back to the ship to watch the light show and then get ready to go out for the night. We went to Lang Kwai Fong which is a street on Hong Kong Island that basically you just party in the street and walk freely in and out of the bars. It was so much fun. And guess who I ran into there
THE RUGBY TEAM FROM BEIJING! They followed us to Hong Kong! Seriously
what a small small world!
But yea then we just went back to the ship and crashed. Well this was a short post but I will update you about the rest of hong kong later. Now i need my beauty sleep for VIETNAM tomorrow morning!!!
Beijing Part 2
Back to where I left off...
We got on the bus after the Silk Market and everyone was exhausted so everyone fell asleep instantly on the bus. It was about a 2 hour drive to the Great Wall. We went to the Jinshanling area of it which is more original and not restored as much as the other parts. Its not every day you wake up from your nap and you look out the window to the Great Wall. We went to the Great Wall and we hiked up it to watch the sunset which was so beautiful. After the sunset, we hiked back down to our bus and then got on it and went to dinner.
Dinner was good! We sat at these huge tables with like a revolving table in the center and they just kept brining food out and putting it on the table. We had everything! Dumplings, white rice, soup, orange pork, noodles
just everything! I forget all we had because there was so much food! Oh and broccoli! There was broccoli there too. After dinner we went to our bus and got dressed to sleep on the great wall! Everyone was layering up because it was soooo cold out. We then drove back to the part of the Great Wall we hiked to see the sunset, and we were handed a dinky little flashlight to shine our way up all these steps to where we were going to sleep. So then we started our hike! And it was tough. Very very tough. It was all stairs and it just kept winding and winding upwards and we couldnt see where we were going only just a bunch of flashlights in front of us. Me, Christina, and this kid Taylor were beasting it though. We didnt know we were the only ones from our group so far ahead and we were hiking with the other group. We started rocking out to some music and we got to the top
. Only to find out we had to hike more along the wall to get to our watchtower. We had to climb through one watchtower and down this tiny, tiny ladder (all in the dark remember!) and then across the wall where its falling apart and some parts of it had no sides
and then we got to our watchtower and had to hoist ourselves up into our watchtower. The only step we had to get into the watchtower were 4 rocks piled on top of each other. Oh, and by the way
we were listening to Mulan as soon as we got on the wall and all the way to our watchtower. We got in our watchtower and cracked open a celebratory beer and waited while the rest of our group got there. When they got there, we were playing Mulan, Ill make a man out of you for them. Before everyone else got there we were touring the watchtower and we went to the other side and it was a straight drop. So when Tommy got there we asked him which way we would be hiking and when he pointed in the way that the drop was we showed him the drop and he just goes
ohmygod! He did not know that it was a drop there. But then he realized that we had to walk in front of the tower and then we climbed back onto the wall.
Me, Patty, and Christina went outside to star gaze and Tommy our tour guide was standing in the opening of the watchtower going
oh you so brave! because he thought we were brave for sitting out there because it was cold and rocky and all. And he didnt want us sleeping out there because there were no walls and it was hilly and he wanted us in the watchtower to sleep. So he kept going, oh you so brave. And then he went
ahhhh
. So beautiful
. So original
so natural and we were like
what tommy? And he was saying that the part of the wall we were on was the most original part of it and it has not been restored.
We then went to bed and we each got a mat and 2 sleeping bags and I was like a cocoon in it. It was hard to move in but sooo warm. At one point I went to turn and I was sleeping next to a wall in the watchtower and I hit the wall with my hand and a bunch of pebbles came crashing down.
We were supposed to wake up for the sunrise but we all slept through it and missed it by like 10 minutes. But whatever, we saw the sunset so I guess thats enough. And when we woke up we were all laying there and this guy comes around the corner and goes
HELLO!!!! and it was the funniest thing ever. After we all grabbed some breakfast and coffee and rolled our bags up we started out for our hike! We found out that we hiked like 1440 steps the night before! Oh and ps
we had a kid on cructches in our group! Thats how awesome my group is. And then on the hike we all stuck together and it only took us 2 hours to hike 4 miles of the wall to the Simatai section. After we got to that section
we ZIPLINED across the river! It was sooooo much fun! We then walked down to the restaurant and got more food (basically what we ate the night before) and then we got on the bus and headed to the Olympic Greens.
Once we got on the bus everyone passed out instantly and we woke up to Tommy waking us up at the Olympics. We saw the birds nest and the water cube and attempted jumping pictures. Which by the way
are VERY hard. We took like 5 minutes to get a good one on the Great Wall and it actually took us a little less at the Olympic Stadium. So as we are leaving there
. Who do we see? THE RUGBY TEAM again!! They were EVERYWHERE. And I also saw Steph who was on a different trip then me!
After the Olympics, we went back to our hotel and we got ready to go see an acrobatic show. It was INSANE! Like the things they did were incredible. There was one point all these girls got on the same bike. And then there was another part where like these 2 guys were on this craft in mid air and they would run around it and it would go around in circles and one guy was on top of it blindfolded! It was INSANE! After the acrobatic show, we just went out and met up with other semester at Sea people.
The next morning, we woke up and went to this park called Jingshan Park and went up to the Coal Hill which overlooked all of the Forbidden City. It was amazing. While we were up there we walked around and then dressed up as empresses! And when we went to undress there was a couple dressing up and they wanted a picture of us and be a family! After that, we did some dancing with some elders in the park, tai chi, and we did this paddle thing and it holds a ball on it. Then we left and grabbed some lunch before catching a taxi to catch a flight to Hong Kong. Our flight to Hong Kong was delayed a half hour but we arrived in Hong Kong around 8:30ish and got to the ship which was docked on Kowoloon Island around 10. The mall we were docked at had free wi-fi and I skyped with Lauren and Ben and John and Gracie, and went on Facebook and posted my pictures from Japan. It was nice to skype and go on websites that we are deprived of here on the ship. I went to bed around 1:15 am to prepare for a busy 2 days in Hong Kong. Thats it for today and I will try and write about Hong Kong tomorrow.
Tomorrow we get to Vietnam! So if I dont write tomorrow, I will try my best to do it soon!
